Atherton Retreat
Atherton, CA
Project Scope: Full-Home Furnishings / Art / Wallpaper / Lighting / Rugs / Styling / Plants
Designed as a refined pied-à-terre, this residence serves as a functional and expressive home base for a husband-and-wife team who are deeply respected within Los Angeles’ professional and creative circles. As prominent figures in their industry, the clients required a space that could seamlessly support their time in the Bay Area—accommodating work commitments, public-facing events, and moments of retreat between engagements.
Function and flexibility were central to the design. Spatial flow and proportions were carefully considered to allow the home to expand for larger industry gatherings, while still maintaining a sense of intimacy and ease during quieter stays. The layout supports movement, conversation, and hosting with intention, yet never feels oversized or impersonal.
The home’s contemporary architecture provides a clean, understated framework for an eclectic and globally informed interior. Artifacts and artwork collected from Asia, Europe, and beyond are layered throughout, reflecting the clients’ travels, relationships, and cultural fluency. Mid-century silhouettes are paired with rare antique finds and statement furnishings from iconic design houses, all grounded by a restrained palette of neutral tones and rich, tactile materials.
While the residence functions primarily as a sophisticated urban base, it was also designed to remain warm and welcoming for family visits. Subtle moments of softness and comfort ensure the home can easily transition from professional hosting to personal use, supporting time spent with their children when they are in the city.
The result is an interior that feels composed yet expressive—worldly, functional, and unmistakably personal. A true pied-à-terre that balances visibility and privacy, structure and character, crafted to support a dynamic lifestyle with quiet confidence.
